Contractors who work with asbestos removal are required to go through strict licensing regulations. The licensing is a way that the government can ensure that asbestos removal contractors have the right training, experience and skills to ensure the safe removal of the product. In this way they can be assured that the removal work does not become a threat either to the worker o the environment

What are the requirements for an asbestos contractor?

• A person who decides to become an asbestos contractor needs to be at least 18 years of age.

• They have to demonstrate that they are the appropriate person for the license and that means demonstrating the appropriate training and technical knowledge in working with asbestos. This person is required to take an examination for licensing purposes

• They must have 3 years experience in the field.

• They must own the appropriate safety equipment to work with asbestos

• They must have workers compensation insurance and liability insurance which covers working with asbestos.

Once a contractor has applied for a license, it takes about four weeks for approval. They cannot work on an asbestos related projects unless they have a license which must be renewed every two years. The purpose of contractor licensing in this area is to ensure that a contractor has the right skills, and experience so as to avoid environmental contamination or a workers contamination.

When there is a job that requires asbestos removal, a permit is required. The reason for this notification and permit is so that any job involving asbestos can be monitored by government officials. During the term of a license, checks will be made at different intervals to make sure that the appropriate procedures and equipment are being used. Not only that, but a license can be cancelled if it is determined that the contractor is not working in compliance with the regulations.

As you can see, working with asbestos is quite complicated and requires a specialized contractor to remove any traces of this material from a home or building. It is important to remove asbestos, but it must be done by a licensed and qualified contractor, and under no circumstances should it ever be done by the owner himself or by an unqualified contractor.

Consult an Asbestos Specialist Before It?s Too Late

Posted by:  :  Category: Asbestosis Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor. It affects the epithelium that lines the lungs, heart or abdomen. This condition affects those who are exposed to asbestos and products that contain the same.

Asbestos is used widely in the building industry, factories and sometimes even in homes since it is non-inflammable, resistant to chemicals and acts as a good insulation. It is a fibrous substance and is commonly used in the form of sheets. In the 1970s, following years of research, a ban was enforced since it was found that asbestos was the cause of cancer. Despite warnings of the dire consequences of using asbestos, the material is still popular because of its extensive applications. The high-risk areas are asbestos factories and the surrounding residential areas.

If you have queries about the material and the health hazards of using asbestos, if you are working in or living near an asbestos manufacturing unit, the best person to address your issues to is an asbestos specialist. He has the authority to publicize the threat the use of asbestos poses to human health. Besides warning people, the consultant will enlighten you on the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent conditions precipitated by the proximity of asbestos. Mesothelioma and other life threatening diseases like asbestosis are directly linked to being exposed to asbestos.

Besides spreading awareness about the ill effects of working in an environment where asbestos is used or manufactured, and advising them about preventive measures, the consultant makes people aware of government strictures on how and where asbestos and products containing the fiber should be used.

These specialists also work closely with the management in factories to implement the laws and strictly abide by them. A series of safety precautions are laid down which are to be followed to the letter. This helps in safeguarding the laborers from contracting diseases as a result of their vulnerability to asbestos.

The consultant is also responsible for inspecting commercial property and residential complexes to locate if and where asbestos or products containing asbestos have been used. When he finds that asbestos has been used, he examines the material to check what state it is in. After a thorough check if he finds that the product is in mint condition, he will leave it as it is, but he will lay down guidelines on how to manage the situation without disturbing the area in and around the asbestos. On the other hand, if he finds that the product is in bad shape and in need of repair, he will instruct you on how to go about the repairs or suggest that the offending sheets of asbestos be removed entirely.

If the latter is recommended, it involves a great deal of expenditure. Moreover, it poses the gravest danger since during the operation, the fibers released are breathed in by those in the vicinity or even ingested by some. This could trigger off diseases of the respiratory organs. Therefore, this operation is resorted to only if all other methods fail. Even if removal is advised, experts should be called in to carry out the procedure.

Lung Cancer and Its Effects On Human

Posted by:  :  Category: Cancer Patients

Lung cancer is the common form of cancer that occurs in the part of lungs and is mostly characterized by the existence of the malignant tumors. Commonly it is the bronchogenic carcinoma all about 90%. The Lung cancer is one of the main lethal of all the cancers worldwide; it leads up to 3 million deaths per annum. Merely one in ten of the lung cancer patients are diagnosed with this virus that would survive the next five years. Even though the lung cancer was before an illness that exaggerated predominately in most of the men, the lung cancer pace for women has increased in the previous few decades that has been accredited to the mounting ratio of the female to most male smokers. Additional women die of the lung cancer than some other cancer that includes the uterine cancers, breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Present researches designate that the aspect with the maximum impact on danger of lung cancer is lasting exposure to the inhaled carcinogens. The main common way of such exposure is through the tobacco smoke. The Cigarette smoking is the major significant reason of the lung cancer. Study as far back as 1950s obviously established this connection. Cigarette smoking contains additional than 4000 chemicals. Numerous of which are been identified as the causing cancer. An individual who smokes further than 1 pack of cigarettes for each day has a maximum risk of rising lung cancer “20-25″ times greater than one who has by no means smoked.
Various Air pollution from the motor vehicles, factory, and extra sources may add to the risk for the lung cancer, other than the Asbestos experience increases the jeopardy of lung cancer with 9 times. The combination of the asbestos exposure and various cigarette smoking compounds the danger by as lot as 50 times. The degree of raise has not been recognized accurately. Convinced occupations where the exposure to arsenic, aromatic hydrocarbons, chromium, nickel and ethers occur might increase the danger of the lung cancer. An individual who has have lung cancer is further likely to build up second lung cancer than average person is to build up the first lung cancer. One of the best treatments of the lung cancer much depends on whether NSCLC or SCLC is present. The treatment also depends on the tumor stage, mainly in “NSCLC”. A person’s universal physical form is also taken into the account. The majority widely used therapy for the lung cancer is surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Lung Cancer, Causes, Diagnosis and Treatment

Posted by:  :  Category: Cancer Patients

Lung cancer may be the most tragic cancer because in most cases, it might have been prevented, 87% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Lung cancer has long been the most common cause of cancer death in men and since 1987 it has also become the most common cause of cancer death in women. Lung cancer is the second most commonly occurring form of cancer in most western countries and although the lung cancer incidence is less common in developing countries, the rapid increase in the popularity of smoking will see the number of lung cancer sufferers in those countries quickly catch up with the western world.
Lung cancers can arise in any part of the lung, and 90%-95% of cancers of the lung are thought to arise from the epithelial, or lining cells of the larger and smaller airways (bronchi and bronchioles); for this reason, lung cancers are sometimes called bronchogenic carcinomas or bronchogenic cancers.
The most common type of lung cancers are epidermoid carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
Most experts agree that lung cancer is attributable to inhalation of carcinogenic pollutants by a susceptible host. Who is most susceptible? Any smoker over the age of 40, especially if they began smoking before the age of 15, have smoked 20 or more for 20 years, or worked with or near asbestos. Two other factors also increase susceptibility: exposure to carcinogenic industrial and air pollutants (asbestos, uranium, arsenic, nickel, iron oxides, chromium, radio active dust, and coal dust.) and familial susceptibility.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Because early lung cancer usually produces no symptoms, the disease is often in an advanced stage when first diagnosed. Late stage signs are: with epidermoid and small cell carcinoma; smokers cough, hoarseness, wheezing, dyspnea, hemoptysis and chest pain. With adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma; fever, weakness, weight loss, anorexia and shoulder pain. In addition, hormone production which regulates various body functions may also be affected.
DIAGNOSIS
Firm diagnosis requires chest x rays, sputum cytology, CT scanning, bronchoscopy the examination of pleural fluid and biopsies. Other tests to detect metastasis include bone scans, bone marrow biopsy and CT scans of the brain and abdomen.
METASTASES
Lung cancer most often spreads to the liver, the adrenal glands, the bones, and the brain. Lung cancer that has metastasized to the bone causes bone pain, usually in the backbone (vertebrae), the thighbones, and the ribs. Lung cancer that spreads to the brain can cause difficulties with vision and weakness on one side of the body.
Lung cancer may grow into certain nerves in the neck, causing a droopy eyelid, small pupil, sunken eye, and reduced perspiration on one side of the face; together these symptoms are called Horner’s syndrome (see Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Horner’s Syndrome). Lung cancer may grow directly into the esophagus, or it may grow near it and put pressure on it, leading to difficulty in swallowing. Lung cancer may also spread through the bloodstream to the liver, brain, adrenal glands, spinal cord, and bone.
TREATMENT
Treatment for lung cancer depends on the cancer’s specific cell type, how far it has spread, and the patient’s performance status. If investigations confirm lung cancer, CT scan and often positron emission tomography (PET) are used to determine whether the disease is localised and amenable to surgery or whether it has spread to the point where it cannot be cured surgically. Treatment is usually a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Surgery is usually the first option. Chemotherapy can be used as a first line treatment for lung cancer or as additional treatment after surgery. Radiation therapy can be directed at your lung cancer from outside your body (external beam radiation) or it can be put inside needles, seeds or catheters and placed inside your body near the cancer (brachytherapy). Radiation therapy can be used alone or along with other lung cancer treatments. Radiation therapy can also be used to lessen side effects of lung cancer.
Treatment may not be as effective for patients with bone or liver metastases from lung cancer, excessive weight loss, ongoing cigarette use, or pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease or emphysema. At some point, if you and your oncologist or primary care physician agree that treatment no longer is advisable, hospice care can provide comfort.

Asbestos and the Risk of Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Posted by:  :  Category: Mesothelioma Symptoms

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was once used in the construction and home improvement industries. It was put on ceilings when it was mixed with aertex, it was used to make surfaces semi flame resistant and it was also mixed with cement as it is very strong. At one point asbestos was seen as a revolution for these industries as it was just so versatile – it was also deadly. No one realised at the time that every time they were exposed to asbestos that they were taking their life in their hands and putting themselves in grave danger. Asbestos is now banned but its legacy lives on in the thousands of people who are feeling the after effects of being exposed to it over the years.

Exposure to asbestos is directly related to certain types of cancer, including peritoneal mesothelioma which is cancer of the membranes in the abdominal cavity. Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second rarest form of mesothelioma and each year it is responsible for around 20% of the cases of diagnosed mesothelioma. As exposure to asbestos is the only known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma there are two main ways that doctors believe that it can actually reach the abdominal wall. One way is through the digestion of asbestos fibres which is actually easy than most might think. Once in the digestive system the asbestos fibres get stuck in the peritoneum and over time this can result in peritoneal mesothelioma. The second way that asbestos gets to the abdomen is through the lymph nodes and lungs when asbestos is inhaled. In some cases pleural mesothelioma will result in peritoneal mesothelioma ad the asbestos moves through the lungs and into the abdominal cavity if left untreated and undiagnosed for some months.

Suspicion of peritoneal mesothelioma is usually made when a patient exhibits signs such as pain in the abdomen, chest or stomach and many suspect hernias are actually created by a tumour caused by peritoneal mesothelioma. Often a misdiagnosis that does not include peritoneal mesothelioma can be made and this can have severe repercussions on the life expectancy of a patient. It is usual for someone who is thought to have peritoneal mesothelioma to have to undergo many tests to get a correct diagnosis and these tests are imaging scans and tissue biopsies.

Patients who are found to have peritoneal mesothelioma do not have a good prognosis. However if a diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is made early enough they could have surgery to remove the disease and some cases it can extend a patient’s life span for a few more years. If surgery is not an option then chemotherapy or radiotherapy can help although there is no guarantee that this will make much of a difference. It is essential that a person with peritoneal mesothelioma gets the right kind of treatment for any pain that they experience so that they are as comfortable as they can be. Peritoneal mesothelioma, like the other forms of mesothelioma is highly unpleasant and hard to live with.

Symptoms of Asbestos Related Medical Conditions

Posted by:  :  Category: Asbestosis Mesothelioma

Asbestos is a kind of mineral fiber and is used for strengthening and insulation. Until the year 1973 it was used as a raw material for different products. Its use was later discontinued due to its hazardous qualities. Asbestos fiber is said to have very harmful qualities that can prove to be fatal. Any person who comes in contact with asbestos fiber at work may be at the risk of contracting diseases that are asbestos related.

The fibers of asbestos, when inhaled, cause mesothelioma cancer. In this condition the mesothelium lining present in the stomach, lungs and various other internal organs in the body get affected. Exposure to asbestos may also cause asbestosis and lung disorders that may be very serious. The problem with asbestos symptoms is that the disease cannot be detected in its early stages to be cured, as the symptoms are hardly noticeable.

The symptoms that are related to asbestos are subtle and not easily identifiable. It can take many years from the time of exposure to asbestos fibers for the symptoms to become noticeable. So the person suffering from the ill effects of being exposed to asbestos may not be aware of anything being wrong for a long time.

There are different kinds of asbestos symptoms that can be experienced by an individual. These symptoms may vary in degree depending on the kind of asbestos affliction one is suffering from. Asbestosis is non cancerous and is progressive in nature. Asbestosis may affect a person as soon as he is exposed to asbestos fibers. However the symptoms may not appear until fifteen to thirty years after the person has been first exposed to asbestos. This disease causes a build up of tissues that replace the tissues present in the lungs’ lower half, obstructing normal functioning. The common signs are chronic cough, dyspnoea or shortness of breath, chest pain and difficult in breathing.

Malignant mesothelioma is another very serious asbestos disease. The symptoms of this disease are not noticeable up to fifty years from the first instance the person was exposed to the asbestos fibers. The symptoms depend largely on the kind of mesothelioma it is. A person suffering from this disease may experience chest pain, dyspnoea, weight loss, anemia, swelling, bowel problems, night sweats, fever and persistent cough.

It is very difficult to detect asbestos symptoms, especially when the disease is in its early stages. The abnormalities that develop when the disease begins may not appear in the x-ray of the lungs. It is only at a much-advanced stage of mesothelioma or asbestosis that the abnormalities appear distinct and more prominent.

In advanced asbestosis, the chest x-ray will be able to show up the abnormalities and the evident opacity in the affected lung. These symptoms could appear as linear shadows that the x-ray will reveal.

The treatment options will vary depending on the kind of asbestos disease the patient is suffering from. Mesothelioma can be treated with the appropriate surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Asbestos in Buildings and Homes

Posted by:  :  Category: Asbestosis Mesothelioma

A lot of people are worried about asbestos, but what they do not realize is that undisturbed asbestos usually poses little or no problems.

On the other hand, everything should be done to prevent the release of asbestos fibres as they can cause serious damage to your health, especially to your lungs and be the cause of cancers. That is why asbestos surveys or asbestos removal should be done as soon as you find out that there is asbestos somewhere.

It is usually very difficult to see whether there is asbestos or not in a building or a home and that is why if you are not sure or have doubts, you should contact a company that will carry out asbestos surveys to find out more.

It is important to know though that if you think that you are living in a house with asbestos there is no need to panic. As long as asbestos is not damaged or disturbed, it is safe. That is why you should never do any type of work on asbestos materials like sawing it or drilling it.

The best thing to do is to contact specialists that will advise you of what to do and if an asbestos survey is necessary or if you need asbestos removal straight away.

As asbestos was commonly used between the fifties and the eighties, you will be most likely to find some in places like rainwater fall pipes, fire blankets, garage and shed roofs or even in floor tiles.

Interestingly, most people are exposed to a very low amount of asbestos that is present in the atmosphere but this as no effects of their health. This is completely normal since asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. On the other hand, asbestos fibres and dust are pretty dangerous if inhaled over a certain period of time and in higher concentrations. This inhalation can even cause lung diseases like cancer for example.

People really need to be aware of the danger of asbestos since it is the greatest single cause of deaths at work in the United Kingdom, and that is why asbestos awareness training are being done more and more in companies and that asbestos surveyors inspect many building to do asbestos surveys and find out whether the buildings we are working in are safe or not. Asbestos related diseases are responsible in the United Kingdom of around four thousand deaths every year.
